“They say necessity is the mother of invention—and that’s how I developed the Handybar®,” said Ian Stewart, President of Avenue Innovations, Inc., manufacturer of the Handybar®. "After knee surgery I found it almost impossible to get in and out of the car. Looking for an affordable solution, and realizing there was none, I developed the Handybar®. After showing the idea to others I knew it could help millions of permanent and temporarily mobility-challenged people.”
TESTIMONIALS
Please continue to make the large stand up display that holds 16 even if you have to charge something for it. It 's a great attention getter. And maybe A clearer/fuller picture of the car door (the one with the nice gentleman getting out of the car. ). I watch people staring at the picture with a cocked head , frown brow and trying to figure it out. The picture on the back with the lady shows more of the Door. BTW I LOVE THE HANDYBAR . I feel so stupid now, since Jim feel in love with the handybar product when he got it well over a year ago and wanted us to sell it. I had such a full plate and knew we couldn't take it to our craft show so I didn't want to hear about it and told him to sell it to his van conversion customers. Then this past spring while i was working in the yard trying to pull up a landscaping rock that i thought was only about a foot long and turned out to be about 2 1/2 ft long......I pulled my back out big time so the rock won ! It was after several days of him having to take me back and forth to the doctors that he suggested that i use the Handybar. So I did and I LOVED IT. It was several days later I learned that it also had a seat belt cutter and a window breaker on it....I said WHY didn't you Make me listen to you about this product when you were so excited?? MEN !!! LOL FYI - Jim and I did a craft show this past weekend where we couldn't bring any items other than items hand made by the vendor. (We sell Theraputic Herbal packs for use on your body to relieve stress and helps promote healing and safer than using an Ice Pack or heating pad. So this past weekend , I took Linda (the wonderful lady who runs the craft show) a handybar as a gift as she also has fibromyalgia and back problems like I do. Since we knew we couldn't sell the handybars there we only had two with us as the van was packed with our other products and we were staying the weekend. . I gave Linda , the handybar on Saturday afternoon during the show when I was able to catch up with her, and after i told her the "5 ways" that I use it, I said I Hoped she'd use it as it really helps me a huge amount. Later that day she had to go home to get something and she used it. SHE LOVED IT !!! and came to us and said get what ever you have of them out of your van and sell them here!~. I told her we only had two --since i knew she had a strick rule about selling anything NOT made by the vendor. She said" let the other vendors deal with me if they have a problem with it ....It's my show and I love this thing, " ! ;-) so Bless my husband Jim as he drove back to our house (3 hours round trip to get them from the garage ) while i handled our booth on saturday. He got back to the show at closing time (tho he was doing the bust butt boogie to get back asap ! . It was a 2 day show so we knew we still had Sunday in which to sell them. ( I have to tell you, this is a small down home country town and we NEVER make much money at this show but we've done it for 6 yrs. because we have other vendor friends and always have a great time, tons of laughs and the Promoter pulls out all the stops to help her vendor make some money and even has a buffet for the vendors on friday night during their set up which she pays for. . Money it tight and ppl there don't spend much. It's a lot of little blue hair ladies shopping etc. ;-) We love the people there and keep going back. Yeah ! since we did manage to sell 10 on sunday and gave out lots of the pamphlets and told them we'd be back at the home and garden show in March with the Handybars since this craft show is only $1.00 to get in and the profits from the door and booth charges all go to the American cancer Society for research. ., The people don't bring much money with them (their older and want to get of stuff and don't buy much. ) BUT the show is beautifully set up, Christmas and Christian music played , and they really get into the giving spirit. That's why we keep going back and don't care at this show if we make money or not. . Also To my knowledge none of the other 115 vendors complained about us selling a commerical product. Infact several vendors bought them . Many ppl said they had seen them on T.V...?? I never have. We only wish now that I was able to give Linda the handybar on Friday night so we could have sold them on Saturday the really big day of the show. ON our table we had the top of the large display case you had sent me, and Jim had taken a large 2x2 about 3 ft. high , anchored it in a strudy brace, and had gotten a U shaped stricker from work and drilled it in the 2 x 2 near the top of the board and we had the handybar sticking out of it for display so they could understand it better. BTW I also discovered 2 wks ago when My back was really bothering me that I could take the handybar while sitting in the drivers seat and without having to bend out of my car to reach the door handle to close the door that I could just extend my arm out with the handybar and insert it in the door handle and pull the door closed !!! Whoa yaaaaa hoo ! ;-) I also have a favorite Asian grocery store that i like to shop at . The store is wonderful inside but the shopping center that the store is in , isn't the safest around by far. . So I put the handybar in my large purse that's hanging over my shoulder, my hand wrapped tightly around the handybar inside my purse when I'm in the parking lot and I pity the poor sucker that tries anything. I'm a great aim and being a Christian will pray for forgiveness when his skull in opened on the ground. :-) I even keep one on my night stand now. Jim laughs as he talked about getting a gun b/c of many recent breakin in our "use to be very safe neighborhood" but I'm too afraid of that,. ~besides I tell him a 44 mag. and a menapausal woman don't MIX ! :-) THO , I DO need to practice throwing the handybar to make sure if someone breaks in they won't be missed !!! Seriously , I truly feel more secure with it in my car and house. I'm really a nice and gentle person REALLY but if it's me or them....I'm going to win ! I need to get some pictures to send you of me closing the door to my car with it, and how it's in my hand in my purse... SO THANK YOU so much for such a Great and needed product. HUMMMMMMM 5 min's to answer the questions and reply...seems like I've over extended myself. Sorry for all the rambling. BUT I LOVE IT !!! I get so excited demo' ing it that ppl laugh at me and Buy it . Have a blessed and Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year to all of you.
Sincerely,
Gale Senseman - Privette, Nature's Hands
I would like to tell you how much I appreciate the Handybar. It is a wonderful help getting in and out of the car. I have arthritis in my knees and before I received the Handybar I had to have help to get out of the car. It is so easy now with the Handybar and less painful than before. I think the Handybar is a wonderful invention and I would highly recommend it to any one who has difficulty getting in and out of the car.
-Mary P.
Transferring out of a car has gotten a whole lot easier with the HandyBar! It's a safe, easy, and affordable piece of equipment. As an occupational therapist, I have recommended the HandiBar to several patients with anything from generalized weakness to Parkinson's Disease."

My 82 year old mother has severe rheumatoid arthritis which has necessitated one total knee replacement. She is now needing the other one done. Because of this she has great difficulty getting in and out of any vehicle. I saw this product and the "Standers CarCaddie" and ordered both. She is now able to transfer in and out of the car much more easily. She says it is the easiest she's been able to do so in years. We liked both products so much that we ordered another of each so that we don't have to remember to move them between cars. Do remember to check to be sure your car has a "U" shaped striker plate on the door frame as that is where it fits. Luckily we haven't needed the emergency features (seatbelt cutter and window breaker), but it is nice to know they are there, too.

Product has been very helpful for Mom & Dad who both are elderly and have difficulty getting in and out af the car. Would recommend!

Since having back surgery exiting a vehicle has been a problem for me. I have tried several products to aid me in this task. The problem was so bad, that I had to trade vehicles to find one that is easier on me. I now have a full size Mercury Grand Marquis, they don't come any larger than that in my price range. Even after all that, I was still having a problem. I will note that the typical assist handle in most vehicles provides no assistance at all in exiting the vehicle. This is because they are inside the vehicle and can not be used to help exiting unless you are double jointed. I did a lot of research and it came down to the "Handybar" or an assist strap that temporarily install through an open window and wraps around the door frame. The problem with the latter is that you need assistance to safely use it. Someone must be there to prevent the door from closing when you put weight on the strap. This more of a problem if you are parked on an up hill slope. The "Handybar" requires no assistance to use; even when parking on a hill. As long as the door detents will hold the door open, it is a one person operation. I have only one negative which I plan to write the company about. It is my opinion that the handle design should be modified to raise the height of the handle when it is installed in the door latch. I have found that this latch is not at a uniform height in all cars. In some of the smaller vehicles I have tried it in, the handle is low enought to affect its useability. This is because of the vehicle size, the design places the door latch at a much lower height. However in my retro full size American four door sedan the product works very well indeed.

I bought this for my uncle and I had gotten another one for my father. It's great for those who need a little help getting out of any car. It doesn't matter what kind of car you have this will work. I would buy it again.
-Anna Co "Anna"
After reading other reviews, I purchased this for a friend that has a hard time getting out of small vehicles. Wow! This small tool does a great job. There is no assembly required so it is very easy to insert/remove from the door buckle. Catching a ride with a friend, no problem. Carry it with you wherever you go.
-Jo
OK, this thing works, I thought it was a little pricy but it gives me more assistance getting my husband into the car safetly. Now if I only have enough mind left to remember to take it off before I slam the car door.
-Rita McWhorter
This is just the thing for my mobility-challenged mother. She really loves it. It gives her another bit of confidence.

This little device has been an enormous help for my elderly parents. I got it several months ago and keep it in my car for when I take them to the doctor or wherever. My mother was at first reluctant, and now says she's amazed at how much easier the handybar makes getting out of a car. My father, an engineer, took to it right away. Me? I'm just relieved that getting out of a car is less of a struggle for them. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

And you don't have to be old to use it! I had surgery on my leg, the end result being that my leg was painful and swollen, and I had absolutely no ability to move it in any way that made walking easy. Getting in and out of a car with a nearly useless, swollen leg was impossible. When I was released from the hospital, I somehow managed to make it in the car. But getting OUT of the car was impossible! No, I'm not fat at all, but my husband tried and tried, but I guess I was just a dead weight. He finally had to call the first aid squad to pull me out. That was so embarrassing that I did everything possible to avoid going in the car. And then I decided to see if there was any device that could help. The first thing I got was a swivel seat device that makes it easy to "spin" in and out of the seat. The second device was the Standers Handybar. Between the two of these things, I'm mobile again! The bar goes into the hook thing that latches your door. It's very sturdy - nothing lightweight about it, and that means you can put your full weight on it, and it's not going to collapse. I put it in the door latch, lean on it with one hand and use the edge of the dashboard as the other, and ta da! I'm standing on my own two feet! You can also use the handybar to smash a window and cut a seatbelt if you find yourself in an emergency situation. I think the manufacturer tried to find other uses for it that a consumer would use to justify its purchase. As if it needed any more uses! It does what it was made to do, and it made my freedom possible (since I've got months to go while this stupid leg heals.) All I can say is God bless them for devising it. It's the best thing to happen to me since I got out of the damned hospital!

Many thanks for the new HANDYBAR. My father was most impressed and anxious to try it out. He will be 89 this May and finds the Handybar very helpful when he is getting out of the car.
-Bonny O.
It is wonderful, almost a free lift out of the seat!!! And thanks again for sending another one for his car when I am in that one. What a fantastic product. I use mine everyday and love it. Thanks again,
-Lois S.
My brother and I each need one in our cars, so our 93 year old father can get in and out on his own steam! Thanks again for supplying such a useful piece of equipment. Thank you.

in and out of my Chevrolet Suburban. Thank you so much for the Gift of the
Handybar and keep up the great work!

Very helpful device to help me up from my seat in the car. Great invention.
-M.R. Spencer
I am writing to comment on the HandyBar. I bought one in the hope it would assist my 91 year old mother who has osteoarthritis and has always found difficult getting in and out of the car. We recently went on holiday and the HandyBar was invaluable. She can get out of the car with a minimum of effort and it certainly helped to make her holiday a lot more enjoyable. We have found the HandyBar a godsend for my mother. Thank you.
-Dianne W.
A note of thanks: The handy bar made life for my family and particularly my grandmother a little bit easier. Now my dad is keeping it close for days when his back goes out.
-Anthony Quinn
What a great invention! Because of the handybar, my mother is able to get out of my car with her arthritis. As an OTR, I have started recommending your device for any of my clients that have difficulty exiting the vehicle or repositioning when they first get in. As an OT, I think that it is one of the most useful pieces of adaptive equipment that I have come across in 22 years. Thanks for creating such an awesome device!
-Laura Noblitt, OTR/L
When I have that to hold onto I feel so safe. It's really important to have support. I compare it to my walker.
-Grethe J.
This Handy bar has given me mobility to get in & out of the car. I'd be lost without it.
-Nanette D.
I wanted to tell you that my husband is thrilled with his handybar. I was waiting for his lift to be repaired, and saw the AD on the board-- Earl has a hard time getting out of any chair because of his height--with the Handy bar, he can get in and out of the truck by himself, saving the strain on me. We wanted to thank you--who would have thought such a little thing in your life would give my husband back some pride and sure save my back from transfering him from the truck to wheel-chair
-Linda T. Donnellon
Dear HandyBar, I was introduced to your product by one of my patients through Western Arizona Regional Medical Center Home Health Department. I am often asked to instruct patients, families and hospital staff members in car transfers. This would be a product I would definitely promote for my patients to purchase for safe car transfers. Thank you very much.

We need someone in Greenville SC to carry this! I bought my Mom one off QVC, it is a great item. I go to physical therapy weekly and see so many people who would love to have one and would really benefit. Thanks.
- Julie
I can't thank you enough for your assistance. My husband has been taking chemotherapy and it saps his strength and energy. He dearly loves driving his convertible but it has become increasingly difficult for him to get out of the car. The Handybar will be a tremendous help in assisting him to maneuver as well as preserve his strength. Bless you for returning my call so quickly and helping my husband to maintain his independence.
-Peg Oyler
I feel much safer knowing that I could get out of my vehicle in an emergency.
-Audrey
I have MS and am in a wheelchair because of it. Transferring from the car was rough and getting harder until your product came along!
-Ken
I would like to compliment you on your creation of the Handybar. I received one for my birthday last January and find it a great asset in getting in and out of my Honda Accord. I have two bad knees and being able to put all my weight on the bar and push up on it greatly makes it easier to get out of the car. It also gets me in easier as well. Once again thank you and the best of luck in your new endeavour.
-Peter F.
I'll start off by saying- I think you guys have a wonderful product!
My praises and many thanks. Only if people all over the world knew about this product! Thank You again!!!!!
-Susan B.
My dad had his knee surgery in November and was telling me how great these bars are...
-Bob M.
Just saw the Home Business Report article on your Handybar --
congratulations, what a fantastic product. I just recently had my second baby, and man could I have used one of those bars during the last trimester. Just thought you might like to consider marketing to pregnant women...
-Joanne W.
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate having the Handybar. It has made a significant difference enabling me to get in and out of my car, as I have severe back and knee problems. The Handybar has made it much easier for me, and I would strongly recommend it for anyone with the same problems, and also for people with any disability that makes it difficult to get in and out of a car, it is a great help.
-Lyn S.
Thank you for mailing the Handybar so promptly. I bought this for my husband who has Parkinson's disease and found it very difficult to get out of the car. This has solved his problem completely, and he will be taking it to the Parkinson's Support Group meeting on Tuesday. It is entirely possible you will be getting some more orders!
-Shirley B.
This is a real God Send! Wonderful help. I will pass the innovation on.
Thanks ever so much.
-Marian
Just like to add my appreciation and admiration for you invention. Cars are so low now and difficult to exit that your Handy Bar arrives as a most timely invention.
-Robert F.
After a journey of thousands of miles, your Handibar reached us in excellent condition. I think this does not come as a surprise since the bar is really sturdy and the packing materials you used were strong enough to have it dropped from an airplane flying over Dartmouth. We are glad, however, you chose a more conventional way of delivery.
We have tested it out on our car, a Honda Civic following the instructions in the brochure you sent us and there were no surprises. The tip of the Bar fits easily in the doorstriker and provides good support. The handle is soft and comfortable, When not in use, it can be easily carried in the car, since it is not large and takes up little room. All in all we are very pleased and we are convinced that the Handybar will be a great helper to many people.
We plan to display the materials that motivated us to order the Handybar on the Bulletin Board in our apartment building, where there are many seniors.
We wish you every possible success with you very useful invention and that soon many people will think of you as the person who made their lives a bit easier.
-Thomas T.
To Whom It May Concern,
At Hepburn Health Service (HHS) we provide a Volunteer Transport Program at each of the four campuses; Daylesford, Creswick, Clunes and Trentham in Victoria Australia.
HHS recently trialled a Handybar at our Creswick Campus in one of our transport vehicles, and it was a huge success. Some of the folk that we transport regularly, have many problems getting in and out of our vehicles. With the use of Handybar, these people were able, with no help, to get themselves into and out of the cars. In fact, several of these folk were so impressed with the independence that the Handybar provided that they have since purchased one for themselves.
HHS is a not-for-profit organisation with limited funding. With the use of the handybar, we have the opportunity not only to improve our transport service, for both volunteers and clients, there is also an opportunity to promote the Handybar within our community. As a promoter of the Handybar, HHS Volunteer Program would like to request the donation of 4 Handybars (one for each campus) to support the transport program. With over 1,000 transports per year the donation of the handybars would continue to improve the service offered, assisting volunteers transporting clients and to ensure clients remain as independent as possible.
This would be a prime opportunity for your company to demonstrate the uses of the Handybar, an opportunity for advertisement and, of course, would be of great help to the folk that use the Volunteer Transport Program.
New Device Godsend if You Have Difficulty Getting In or Out of Car
Fifty Plus - By Pedro J. Arrais

Mobility is a priority for seniors because it means independence.
For most, mobility means the car. Unfortunately age and illness take their toll and getting in and out of cars can become difficult. Compounding the problem are cars that are low to the ground. It can become embarrassing to have to have somebody to help you in and out of a car.
A local inventor, Ian Stewart, has a novel solution and it has been flying off the shelves since its introduction in December 1999.
Called the Handybar®, this deceptively simple patented device allows senior drivers and passengers to get in and out of their cars or sport-utility vehicles easily.
The Handybar® is a sculptured anodized-steel shaft with a comfortable, soft-grip handle. It uses the existing door latch as a fulcrum. The elderly and others with mobility problems can use this fulcrum to lever or pivot themselves out of a vehicle. Without such a device, people typically grab the door frame for support, which for many can be uncomfortable.
The bar gives users that added margin of safety. A locking mechanism prevents the unit from being accidentally dislodged.
The device is compact and very portable. Some users carry it with them so that they may use it in a variety of vehicles. Others just leave it in their cars, as it is easy to store.
The Handybar® fits most domestic and Japanese vehicles. It comes with a lifetime warranty.
The product can also be found in the parts department of most car dealerships.
This new product is affordable and represents an investment in one's personal safety and peace of mind.
